For refining the edible oil, there are four basic processes in the refinery: Degumming, Deacidification/ Neutralisation, Decoloration/Bleaching, Deodorization. In addition, the sunflower oil, the rice bran oil and corn germ oil need dewaxing; the crude palm oil need refining and fractionation.

1.Degumming：First process is neutralizing the oil in the neutralizer to remove the Free Fatty Acids (FFA) by adding caustic soda.
2.Neutralisation：Neutralized oil is drawn into the second vessel called bleacher where color of oil is removed by bleaching process with aid of chemicals such as carbon black and bleaching earth.
3.Decoloration：Bleached oil then goes to the filter press where bleaching earth and chemicals are separated and clean bleached oil is then drawn to deodorizer. Entire process is done under high vacuum.
4.Deodorization:Deodorization is actually a stripping process in which a given amount of a stripping agent (usually steam) is passed for a given period of time through hot oil at a low pressure. Hence, it is mainly a physical process in which various volatile components are removed.
